So turns out this is the second book of a series. This could explain why I felt like I was missing something, but even discounting that, I couldn’t finish this book. The idea of a vampire hunter being saved by a vampire he hunted and was turned into a vampire sounded a little stupid to me. And having the old vampire teach the new guy on how to be a vampire was annoying. So I stopped reading it.
