The Anubis Slayings

by Paul Doherty

Reviewed by Coral

Having defeated the Mitanni, Egypt now welcomes their envoys to negotiate peace. But everything is threatened when murders are committed at the temple of Anubis – where the envoys are being housed – and the Glory of Anubis is stolen from a room locked from the inside.

Could this be a Mitanni plot to discredit Egypt and force the countries back to war? Or is something more sinister at hand? It is up to Judge Amerotke to learn the truth and catch the killer before war is the only choice.

A part of me still doesn’t understand why I like this series, because it has a lot of things I don’t like in fiction: a king/queen overly familiar with their subjects, modern words and sayings that are out of place in the setting, amongst other, but I do enjoy the books overall.

While I happy with the reveal, I was a little confused about some of the details. Without going into too much detail, given how one of the crimes happened, something that Amerotke found wasn’t really needed. Sorry if that sounds a little vague. I was upset mostly because it discredited someone who I believed had turned their life around as promised.

Considering the crimes he was dealing with, I think that Amerotke overlooks some important information. I also thought that one part of the crime was pretty obvious and that Amerotke really should have figured it out sooner.

Because, while I did enjoy it, I didn’t enjoy it as much as other books in the series, I am grading this book a very low B.
