Moon Island

May Duhane did not want to be in Maine, in a house her father was renting for their family for summer vacation. Ever since the death of her mother, May has felt isolated from her father and older sister and things are no different on vacation. So when May comes across the Doone Bennison, a young girl who drowned on the beach the year before, she finds herself drawn to Doone’s life and her secrets.

This wasn’t really the book I thought it was; I feel like I say that a lot, but it seems like either the online summaries of books aren’t accurate or I am misinterpreting what I read.

I thought this book would be more about Doone and her secrets, but it ended up being more about the family drama that surrounded May, her father and her sister in the wake of her mother’s death.

On top of that, there were so many characters brought into contact with May and her family – either full time residents of their vacation town or fellow vacationers. It was hard to care about all of their histories and even to keep them straight.

I was happy that I called one of Doone’s secrets, but even that was a little underwhelming.
