The Silver Pigs

by Lindsey Davis

Reviewed by Coral

A senator’s niece escapes from an attempted kidnapping, running into detective Marcus Didius Falco. Trying to protect her, Falco learns that the kidnappers wanted access to something hidden in her bank vault. What he finds is silver, stolen from the mines of Britain and a potential assassination plot that could destroy the tentative peace that has settled over the Roman Empire.

I didn’t really like this book. I couldn’t connect to the main character of Falco. I found myself wondering why Sosia, the senator’s niece, would even trust him after escaping her kidnappers.

There was too little in the way of the actual investigation. Falco goes to check out the mining operation in Britain, but instead of seeing what he sees, and reading as he puts the clues together, we are just told what he has concluded at the end.

It’s the same for the story’s conclusion, where it seems like he is given the information he needs without having done any investigative work at all.

The language used in some places felt out of place with the setting of the book..

The romance that developed was predictable.

I found the supporting characters to be mostly bland, none of them really stood out.

That being said, I may read the second book in the series to see if there’s any improvement.
