Stormlord Rising

by Glenda Larke

Reviewed by Coral

Shale has been betrayed and finds himself once again in the hands of his enemy, Taquar. But Shale is older now and has come into his powers and will not be so easily controlled again.

In order to save the life of her unborn child Ryka is forced to make a deal with the man appointed Davim’s heir. Taken deep into the Red Quarter, Ryka has to choose whether to save herself or her husband Kaneth, because she may not be able to save them both.

Forced to go back to the homeland her mother died escaping, Terelle wants nothing more than to return to Shale’s side. Unfortunately, her future choices have all been taken from her and there may be nothing she can do to save Shale.

I enjoyed the first book of this series up until the end of it, where I thought people made decisions that had no basis in logic or their characterizations up until that point. All these decisions seemed to happen solely so that Shale would be left alone with Laisa, who of course betrays him. Still, I was a little curious to know what happened next.

Unfortunately, I was mostly annoyed by this book. Senya remains an awful character and my hopes for any kind of growth in her character were unrealized. Terelle and Ryka’s story lines were pretty boring, though there was a twist in Ryka’s story that hooked me so that I will most likely read book three, but that has more to do with other characters in that story than in anything related to her.

I like the premise of this book, even if the world is a little confusing. I just wish the books were a little better.
