Story of a Girl

by Sara Zarr

When she was 13, Deanna Lambert’s father caught her having sex with Tommy Webber in the back of his pickup truck; her life changed forever in that one moment.

Three years later Deanna still struggles with the repercussions from that night: her father won’t speak to her and she has been labeled the “school slut”. On top of that, her older brother became a teenage father and he and his girlfriend are struggling to raise their daughter.

This definitely felt like more of a snap shot than a full story, because there was so much more to tell, but it was an interesting snap shot of a broken family.

It’s not hard to believe that Deanna would be labeled a slut at school while the guy would be idealized – I saw it happen at my own high school – but it is harder for me to believe that her family would ignore the four year (!) age difference between her and Tommy. He was 17! They do mention that her family didn’t want to press charges but to then place all of the blame on her is so grossly unfair.font>

I liked that nothing was really resolved, not completely. Steps were taken towards healing but nothing was magically fixed.
