Sweethearts

As children, Jennifer Harris and Cameron Quick are each other’s only friends, outcasts to the rest of the school. But none of that matters so long as they have each other.

When Cameron suddenly stops coming to school, his family having seemingly disappeared, Jennifer is heartbroken and alone.

Now in high school, Jennifer has worked hard to transform herself from the chubby outcast girl she used to be. She has friends now, a boyfriend, and even a new name, calling herself Jenna and taking her stepfather’s last name. Everything is perfect, until the day when Cameron starts at her school and memories she thought she had buried start coming back.

There were some parts of Cameron’s story that seemed implausible, mostly relating to how he came back into Jenna’s life.

Jenna’s inner voice really resonated with me, having had a lot of the same thoughts about food and life in general.

At one point the story seems to be building to a very dark moment and while I am glad that it didn’t go there, in a way not going there also felt unrealistic to the story. I just don’t think the series of events would have happened as it unfolded in the book..

The non-resolution at the end of the book made sense. Again, it’s another situation where there aren’t really any easy solutions and where things can’t just be magically fixed.
